RESUMEN

Objective Microsurgery remains an integral component of the surgical skillset and is essential for a diversity of reconstructive procedures. The apprenticeship also requires overcoming a steep learning curve, among many challenges. The method of microsurgical training differs depending on the countries' regions and resources of their health care system. Methods The Journal of Hand and Microsurgery leadership held an international webinar on June 19, 2021, consisting of a panel of residents from 10 countries and moderated by eminent panelists. This inaugural event aimed to share different experiences of microsurgery training on a global scale, identifying challenges to accessing and delivering training. Results Residents shared various structures and modes of microsurgical education worldwide. Areas of discussion also included microsurgical laboratory training, simulation training, knowledge sharing, burnout among trainees, and challenges for female residents in microsurgical training. Conclusion Microsurgical proficiency is attained through deliberate and continued practice, and there is a strong emphasis globally on training and guidance. However, much remains to be done to improve microsurgical training and start acting on the various challenges raised by residents.Copyright © 2022. Society of Indian Hand & Microsurgeons. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, nonemergent surgery was postponed in efforts to limit disease spread. To determine whether these changes affected vascular integrated resident (VR) and fellow (VF) operative volume, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) case log data was reviewed. Case volume and standard deviation for each major category was for graduates of 2020 and 2021 were compared to the year prior to the pandemic, 2019. There were only 3 significant changes when comparing 2020/2021 to the prepandemic baseline of 2019, with increase in abdominal obstructive cases for VRs (8.1 in 2021 vs 5.9 in 2019, P = .021), an increase in upper extremity cases for VFs (18.9 in 2021 from 15.8 in 2019, P = .029), and a decrease in venous cases for VFs (39.6 in 2021 from 48.4 in 2019, P = .011). Postponing nonemergent surgery did not translate to significant changes in operative cases for graduating VRs and VFs.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a temporary lapse in the development of otolaryngology trainee operative skills due to the cancellation of elective procedures and redeployment of trainees and attendings to COVID-19 units. Although transient, this disruption provided an opportunity for otolaryngology programs to develop contingency plans and formalize nascent simulation training curricula. Integration of formal simulation training alongside current didactic and surgical education may offset lost exposure during surgically lean times while providing the framework and resources for enhanced baseline training. Here, we provide an up-to-date overview of surgical simulation models in otolaryngology and identify easily implementable, low-cost, low fidelity models for junior trainees. By taking advantage of rapid advancements in technology and a paradigm shift to a more hands-on approach in medical education, formal simulation training may prove to be a beneficial tool at all stages of residency training, allowing for expanded peer-mentored skill development and providing a safe haven during unforeseen disruptions in surgical case volume.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the growing global interest in the role of augmented and virtual reality in surgical training. While this technology grows at a rapid rate, its efficacy remains unclear. To that end, we offer a systematic review of the literature summarizing the role of virtual and augmented reality on spine surgery training. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted on May 13th, 2022. PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, and Embase were reviewed for relevant studies. Studies from both orthopedic and neurosurgical spine programs were considered. There were no restrictions placed on the type of study, virtual/augmented reality modality, nor type of procedure. Qualitative data analysis was performed, and all studies were assigned a Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI) score. RESULTS: The initial review identified 6752 studies, of which 16 were deemed relevant and included in the final review, examining a total of nine unique augmented/virtual reality systems. These studies had a moderate methodological quality with a MERSQI score of 12.1 + 1.8; most studies were conducted at single-center institutions, and unclear response rates. Statistical pooling of the data was limited by the heterogeneity of the study designs. CONCLUSION: This review examined the applications of augmented and virtual reality systems for training residents in various spine procedures. As this technology continues to advance, higher-quality, multi-center, and long-term studies are required to further the adaptation of VR/AR technologies in spine surgery training programs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted teaching in medical schools across the world. Online learning has become the core method of teaching during this pandemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of this mode of education among medical students in India. A survey was conducted by distributing online questionnaires to medical students across India. Data gathered from the survey was analyzed using SPSS® version 16. The overall response rate of survey was 58.4%. Practical training was most severely affected by online classes (93.32%) as compared to theory classes (60.93%). A total of 71.98% students agreed that canceling of physical medical conferences adversely affected the building up of their resumes while only 28.79% agreed that virtual conferences and meetings enhanced their learning. A total of 56.81% agreed that online exams adversely affected their performance. A total of 46.79% feels that online classes using simulated patients and simulation technology is not useful but 41.90% think that simulated teaching should be a part of the medical curriculum. A majority of the students (87.66%) had technical issues with online classes and 89.72% complained of poor concentration during online teaching due to distractions. A total of ~75% felt that the pandemic has adversely affected the availability of research opportunities and development of skills, ethics, communication, and behavior. Online education has adversely affected all aspects of learning, performance in exams, research, and the overall future plans of students. Moving forward from this pandemic, in order to maximize the benefits of both face-to-face and online teaching, we suggest medical schools resort to a hybrid pattern.

BACKGROUND: Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many precautionary measures have been set to curb the transmission of the virus. That has led to changes, most notably in surgical education, like lack of surgical exposure and clinical activities. However, the question aiming at the impact of changes made by the COVID-19 pandemic on surgical education and its extent remains unanswered. MATERIALS & METHODS: An electronic survey was distributed among surgical residents and consultants from all over Saudi Arabia, starting from the 6th till the 21st of July, 2021. Descriptive statistics were presented using counts and proportions (%). Study subjects were compared with the different perspectives during the COVID-19 pandemic by using Chi-square test. A p-value cut-off point of 0.05 at 95% CI was used to determine statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 243 out of 500 surgical residents and consultants responded to the survey, giving a response rate of 48.6%. The majority were general surgeons (50.5%) and cardiothoracic surgeons (21.8%). Nearly 66% of surgeons, both residents and consultants, strongly agreed on the importance of training for infectious disease outbreaks. 44.7% of the consultants and 48% of the residents showed their willingness to respond to the pandemic regardless of its severity. Over 70% of surgeons agreed that developing clinical skills was compromised by the COVID-19 pandemic, and 40% expected a negative impact of the COVID-19 on their operative skills. Simulation was ranked best for disaster medicine training by over 77% of the respondents. The most common concern among surgeons during the COVID-19 pandemic was their family's health and safety. Regarding virtual curriculum components, online practice questions and surgical videos were preferred by the surgical consultant and resident, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Although the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted surgical education, it has highlighted the alarming need for adopting new components. For surgical training programs, we recommend improving the virtual curriculum, incorporating disaster medicine training, providing psychological services, and prioritizing immunization and treatment access for surgeons' families.

BACKGROUND: The Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) is an internationally recognized educational and certification program designed to teach the knowledge and skills required for basic laparoscopic surgery. Previously, our institution has organized an FLS boot-camp to teach PGY1 residents the FLS manual skills. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person sessions were not possible. The purpose of this study was to utilize telesimulation as an education solution for teaching FLS technical skills to PGY1 residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A virtual FLS program was established. A complete, easily portable FLS kit was distributed to participants and instructors to set up an FLS box and connect remotely using telesimulation. The program was delivered by three senior residents using the Zoom™ platform. Participants were split into groups of 3-4 individuals, each receiving three 1-h sessions. Sessions were structured with initial demonstration of tasks followed by individual coaching of participants in 'break-out' rooms. The official FLS exam was administered in-person on the 4th week. Pre- and post-course surveys were administered to participants gauging self-reported proficiency with FLS tasks and overall course feedback. Anonymized FLS exam results were collected. RESULTS: A total of 14 residents participated, and 11 responded to the survey. Participants reported that their overall FLS skills proficiency significantly improved on a 5-point likert scale from 1.5 ± 0.5 pre-course to 4.0 ± 0.5 post-course (mean ± SD). Participants unanimously stated that having the FLS box at home was valuable and enabled them to practice more. On the FLS exam, 13 of 14 participants passed the manual skills component. CONCLUSIONS: We developed a telesimulation hands-on FLS course as an alternative to in-person training. The course was practical and effective and was preferred to traditional methods by participants. With ever-expanding technological solutions, virtual telesimulation education is an attractive and underutilized tool, not only in the setting of COVID-19, but also more broadly across current educational programs.

BACKGROUND: Decreased experiential learning opportunities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic have increased development of online surgical educational courses. To what extent may such courses provide exposure to broad and accessible surgical education? METHODS: Surge is a 6-week online surgical elective hosted within a virtual learning environment, covering all surgical specialties. Course content is mapped to the Royal College of Surgeons' Undergraduate Curriculum in Surgery. Each week consultant surgeons discuss their specialty in short videos on anatomy, pathology and lifestyle of a surgeon. Students also engage with learning activities; further reading lists; formative quizzes and live sessions including suturing practice. Participants were medical students undertaking third-year electives at the University of Sheffield. Pre- and post-course questionnaires investigated student interest in surgery, understanding of steps required to pursue a surgical career and confidence in surgical environments. Qualitative data was collected via free-text responses and analysed with content analysis. Quantitative data was collected using 5-point Likert scales (1 = Strongly Disagree; 5 = Strongly Agree) and analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS: Twenty-two students participated in Surge over five 6-week cohorts. Examination of free-text responses revealed students gained increased understanding of available surgical career options. Students felt better informed regarding different surgical specialties (median score 2.5 vs. 4, p = 0.000) and steps required to develop a surgical portfolio (median score 2 vs. 5, p = 0.000). Additionally, confidence in understanding of relevant intraoperative steps improved (median score 3 vs. 4, p = 0.000). CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate Surge increased student confidence and understanding of surgical careers despite reduced in-person opportunities to engage with surgical education. Surge will continue to be developed and evaluated on a larger scale.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate medical student and attending surgeon experiences with a novel interactive virtual Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) medical student elective during the COVID-19 pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: A virtual OHNS elective was created, with three components: (1) interactive virtual operating room (OR) experience using live-stream video-conferencing, (2) telehealth clinic, (3) virtual didactics. SETTING: OHNS Department at the University of Pennsylvania (May 2020 to June 2020). METHODS: Six medical students from the University of Pennsylvania; five attending otolaryngologists. Two surveys were designed and distributed to participating medical students and attending surgeons. Surveys included 5-point Likert scale items, with 1 indicating "not at all" and 5 indicating "very much so". RESULTS: Response rate was 100% for both surveys. Students on average rated the educational value of the telehealth experience as 4.2 ± 1.2, and the virtual OR experience as 4.0 ± 0.6. Most students (n = 5, 83%) indicated that they had enough exposure to faculty they met on this rotation to ask for a letter of recommendation (LOR) for residency if needed, while attending surgeons had an average response of 3.0 ± 1.0 when asked how comfortable they would feel writing a LOR for a student they met through the rotation. A majority of students (n = 4, 67%) felt they connected enough with faculty during the rotation to ask for mentorship. Half the students (n = 5, 50%) indicated that the rotation allowed them to evaluate the department's culture either "extremely well" or "somewhat well". CONCLUSIONS: Overall, participating students described this innovative virtual surgical rotation as an educationally and professionally valuable experience. With the continued suspension of visiting student rotations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this virtual model may have continued relevance to medical education.

INTRODUCTION: We conducted a single-blind, prospective, randomized, 3-arm controlled trial to compare the efficacy of interactive and noninteractive video-based with instructor-led teaching in acquiring and retaining basic surgical skills. METHODS: Participants were pretested after providing written instruction using a simulator. After the pretest, students were randomized to three groups: noninteractive video-based instruction (NIVBI), instructor-led teaching with concurrent feedback, and interactive video-based instruction (IVBI). An immediate post-test and a retention test were performed 1 mo after the practice session's end to assess the efficacy of practice conditions. Two experts blinded to the experimental condition evaluated performance using expert-based assessment. Data were analyzed using SPSS. RESULTS: There were no differences in expert-based assessments between groups at the pretest. All three groups showed significant improvements in expert-based scores between the pretests and post-tests as well as between pretests and retention tests (P < 0.0001). Instructor-led teaching and IVBI were equally effective initially for teaching this skill to naive medical students and showed better performance than NIVBI (P < 0.0001 each). At retention, IVBI displayed superior performance compared to NIVBI and the instructor-led group (P < 0.0001 each). CONCLUSIONS: Our result showed that video-based instruction could be as effective as instructor-led teaching in acquiring basic surgical skills. These findings support the idea that with thoughtful incorporation into technical skill curricula, video-based instruction may efficiently use faculty time and serve as a helpful adjunct for basic surgical skills training.

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus pandemic has profoundly impacted all facets of surgical care, including surgical residency training. The objective of this study was to assess the operative experience and overall case volume of surgery residents before and during the pandemic. METHODS: Using data from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education annual operative log reports, operative volume for 2015 to 2021 graduates of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education -accredited general, orthopedic, neuro- and plastic surgery residency programs was analyzed using nonparametric Kendall-tau correlation analysis. The period before the pandemic was defined as AY14-15 to AY18-19, and the pandemic period was defined as AY19-20 to AY20-21. RESULTS: Operative data for 8556 general, 5113 orthopedic, 736 plastic, and 1278 neurosurgery residency graduates were included. Between 2015 and 2021, total case volume increased significantly for general surgery graduates (Kendall's tau-b: 0.905, p = 0.007), orthopedic surgery graduates (Kendall's tau-b: 1.000, p = 0.003), neurosurgery graduates (Kendall's tau-b: 0.905, p = 0.007), and plastic surgery graduates (Kendall's tau-b: 0.810, p = 0.016). Across all specialties, the mean total number of cases performed by residents graduating during the pandemic was higher than among residents graduating before the pandemic, though no formal significance testing was performed. Among general surgery residents, the number of cases performed as surgeon chief among residents graduating in AY19-20 decreased for the first time in 5 years, though the overall volume remained higher than the prior year, and returned to prepandemic trends in AY20-21. CONCLUSIONS: Over the past 7 years, the case volume of surgical residents steadily increased. Surgical trainees who graduated during the coronavirus pandemic have equal or greater total operative experience compared to trainees who graduated prior to the pandemic.

Mentorship, experience, and early exposure are key contributors to how medical students decide whether to pursue surgical training. We designed a series of livestream surgeries to provide preclinical (first and second year) medical students with early exposure to six surgical specialties and facilitate mentorship with faculty. Students were surveyed before and after the livestream sessions. Seventeen students completed the post-session survey. On a 5-point scale (1 = 'Not Educational at All'; 5 = 'Very Educational'), average rating of interactions with the facilitating surgeon was significantly higher than with the operating surgeon (4.9 ± 0.3 vs. 4.2 ± 1.1, respectively, p = 0.013). Majority (94%) indicated that the livestream series increased their interest in surgery. This novel course engaged preclinical medical students in surgical education and provided exposure to a breadth of specialties. Dedicated facilitators enhanced students' learning experience, and the series positively impacted students' interest in surgical fields. Future efforts will expand the series to other hospitals and surgical specialties.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of the initiation of COVID-19-related restrictions on the volume of surgical cases performed by otolaryngology trainees. STUDY DESIGN: Multi-institutional retrospective analysis of resident surgical case logs. SETTING: Accredited residency training programs in otolaryngology head and neck surgery. METHODS: Resident surgical case logs were combined from 6 residency training programs from different regions of the United States. Case volumes were compared between the calendar year before March 1, 2020, and the year afterward. Subgroup analyses were performed for the type of hospital (university, pediatric, veteran, county) and the key index cases by subspecialty. RESULTS: All 6 participating residency programs had a decrease in resident operative case volume. Surgical volume decreased from a mean of 6014 to 4161 (P < .05). There were decreases observed in key index cases in every subspecialty (P < .01), without statistical differences seen among subspecialties. There were decreases observed in every hospital type (university, pediatric, veteran, county) without statistical differences among types. Postgraduate year 5 residents were the most affected by volume reductions (51.6%), and postgraduate year 3 residents were the least affected (1.4%). CONCLUSION: In the year following initiation of COVID-19-related restrictions, there was a significant decrease in trainee surgical case volumes within residencies for otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. There were no statistical differences in the volume decreases seen at different institutions, among hospital types, or within various subspecialties.

BACKGROUND: The Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) exam is an important component to the evaluation of trauma patients. With advances in technology and meeting limitations due to COVID-19, remote instruction and learning have gained popularity. We sought to determine whether remote instruction of FAST exams was feasible as sustainable surgical education and a possible alternative to traditional in-person teaching. METHODS: General surgery residents completed a baseline survey and skills assessment on FAST exams and were then randomized to remote or in-person instruction. The remote group participated in an instructional session with a content expert through video conference and then practiced on a simulated mannequin while the expert remotely provided feedback. The in-person group received the experience with the content expert in the room. Both groups completed a post-course survey immediately after the session and a follow-up survey and objective assessment at six-months. Results were compared with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: 14 residents underwent the curriculum, seven in each group. There was a significant increase in self-reported confidence when comparing pre- and immediate post-course results for both the remote and in-person groups. At six months, confidence scores remained elevated and skill assessment scores improved, although the latter did not reach significance. There was no significant difference in post-course results between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Remote instruction of FAST exams was feasible. Pilot data demonstrated an increase in confidence and suggest outcomes that are similar to in-person instruction, which has positive implications for future remote educational and potentially clinical initiatives.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a sudden increase in the need to effectively use telehealth in all realms of health care communication, including the delivery of bad news. METHODS: A single arm, unblinded, feasibility study was performed at a tertiary care center located in Central Virginia to explore the value and utility of providing a telehealth training program based on SPIKES to teach surgical residents and faculty best practice for disclosing difficult news via video-mediated communication (VMC). Surgical interns (categorical and preliminary), surgical residents, and surgical faculty from General, Neuro, Pediatric, Plastics, Oncology, Urology, and Vascular surgical specialties were recruited via email to voluntarily participate in a telehealth simulation-based workshop, with 33 surgical learners participating in the training and 28 completing evaluation surveys. RESULTS: Only six respondents (22%) indicated they had prior formal training on telehealth communication with patients or families, while 13 (46%) said they had prior experience giving bad news via telehealth. Comments about improving the training focused on providing more scenarios to practice and more time for feedback. Overall, 25 learners (86%) agreed the activity was a valuable learning experience and the majority (61%) of responses were positive for future use of telehealth for breaking bad news. DISCUSSION: Practicing communication skills with VMC was found to be valuable by surgical interns, residents, and faculty. Formal training should be provided for surgeons at every stage of training and practice to improve skill in the delivery of bad news to patients and their families.

Accelerated in part by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, medical education has increasingly moved into the virtual sphere in recent years. Virtual surgical education encompasses several domains, including live virtual surgery and virtual and augmented reality. These technologies range in complexity from streaming audio and video of surgeries in real-time to fully immersive virtual simulations of surgery. This article reviews the current use of virtual surgical education and its possible applications in hand surgery. Applications of virtual technologies for preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance, as well as care in underresourced settings, are discussed. The authors describe their experience creating a virtual surgery subinternship with live virtual surgeries. There are many roles virtual technology can have in surgery, and this review explores potential value these technologies may have in hand surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic forced a sudden change from in-person to virtual interviews for the general surgery residency match. General surgery programs and applicants adopted multiple strategies to best mimic in-person recruitment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate applicant opinions of the virtual recruitment format. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Postinterview survey responses for applicants interviewing at a single general surgery residency program in the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 cycles were evaluated. All interviewed applicants were sent an anonymous survey assessing the virtual interview structure, their impression of the program, and their opinions on recruitment in the future. RESULTS: The response rate was 31.2% (n = 60). Most (88.4%) respondents reported a more favorable view of the program after a virtual interview. Factors that were most likely to create a favorable impression were residents (89.6%) and culture (81.0%). 50.8% of applicants favored virtual-only interviews. The majority of applicants (60.3%), however, preferred the virtual interview remain a component of the application process, 34.4% recommended that virtual interviews be used as an initial screen before in-person invites, while 19.0% suggested applicants should interview in-person or virtually without penalty. 62.1% favored capping the number of interviews offered by programs and accepted by applicants. CONCLUSIONS: The virtual interview format for general surgery residency allows applicants to effectively evaluate a residency program. Applicants are in favor of a combination of virtual and in-person interviews in the future. Innovation in the recruitment process, including limiting the number of applications and incorporating virtual events, is supported by applicants.

OBJECTIVE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous institutions converted medical education didactics to electronic formats including both live teleconference didactics and recorded faculty lectures. This study aims to compare the effect of recorded versus live teleconference didactic lectures on medical student examination scores during the surgery clerkship. DESIGN: Medical students completing the Surgery Clerkship received a weekly series of didactic lectures taught by faculty via a teleconference (2020-2021 academic year) or recorded format (2021-2022 academic year). Performance outcomes included weekly quizzes, National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Surgery Shelf Exam, and clerkship Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) scores. SETTING: University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. PARTICIPANTS: All second- (MS2) and third-year (MS3) medical students completing the Surgery Clerkship over two academic years (n = 312). RESULTS: Students who received live teleconference lectures (n = 156) demonstrated higher average scores on weekly quizzes (89%) and the NBME shelf exam (76%) compared to those receiving recorded lectures (n = 156; 71% quiz, 70% shelf exam), both p < 0.001. There was a significant association with performance in the highest quartile (Q1) of weekly quiz scores and receiving live lectures (40% vs. recorded lectures 1%, p < 0.001). Comparing only MS3 students, mean weekly quiz scores and Q1 achievement were significantly higher (both p < 0.001) in the teleconference cohort with no significant difference in NBME shelf exam performance (p = 0.971). No difference in OSCE performance was observed between groups. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that synchronous teleconferences may be more effective than recorded lectures for achieving institutional learning objectives on the surgery clerkship without any negative impact on NBME shelf exam or clinical evaluation parameters. This information should be used to inform future institutional clerkship design and educational initiatives.

RESUMEN

Over the past 10 years we have witnessed major changes to the medical education landscape in response to advances in digital technologies. Couple this with the disruptions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and we have what could be described as a 'perfect storm.' Rather than hunker down and wait for it to pass, we took it as an opportunity to re-evaluate how we practice surgical education in the fourth year of our 6 year medical programme. In this article, we describe the formation of 6 core principles that function as pivot points in developing a new perspective centered on the importance of engaging and empowering our students as emerging clinicians. From these 6 principles, we designed and developed 3 interventions. Each intervention is discussed in regard to its purpose, operation and overall integration into the program.

BACKGROUND: Proctored on site simulation-based surgical education has been integrated in our residents curricula since 2012. Due to COVID-19 pandemic and social distance protocols, we developed a Tele-assisted Essential Skills Training Module (T-ESTM). The aim of this study is to evaluate comparative effectiveness between Telesimulation (T) versus Standard Simulation (S) for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) essential skills training. METHODS: ESTM includes academic lectures, tutorials for ergonomics and 7 hands-on tasks scheduled into 2 sessions of 3 hours. Initial and final assessment scoring (adapted from GOALS) as well as timing for 3 of the tasks were registered. Telesimulation (T) group accessed the content online and completed their Hands-On practice through a digital communication platform. Standard Simulation (S) group attended conferences and Hands-On practice at the simulation center. Both groups were proctored by the same educators with summative and formative feedback and debriefing. Data was analyzed with the R-studio software program. RESULTS: Each group had 20 participants with a mean age of 28 ± 5 years. 67.5% were surgeons in training, 47.5% had performed low complexity procedures and 40% had previous experience with simulation training. We observed a significant improvement in scoring and time reduction for all assessed tasks in S and T groups (p < 0.001), with no statistically significant differences when comparing both groups. Similar performance could be achieved with both strategies. CONCLUSION: Telesimulation is a reproducible and effective educational tool for remote MIS essential skills training, and should be considered as an alternative to on-site simulation programs.
